CHILL, IN THE NIGHT, AS DRIVERS INVADE WEST GEORGIA SPEEDWAY IN NOVEMBER
With $700 up for grabs in a 40 lap hobby race, drivers from everywhere were invading West Georgia Speedway.
The famous track hidden in the lowest part of Whitesburg, Georgia has seen some historic racing action.
Tonight would be no different, maybe less fans due to the weather but that never interferes with a driver. They are on a mission, and some missions are not that good.
Take for instance #89 Carey Smith who lost a tire during the dash for cash race, then there was the #E1 of “Fast Eddie” Johnson having all kinds of trouble controlling his hobby modified truck.
The dash for cash, with only 5 laps lets the selected driver’s race for $100 cash, to the winner. Easy money you think, well think again my friend.
Even with a born winner Scott Sherrer racing and on the pole, he would still be beaten by #07 of Clifton Moran.
When that happened I knew the night would have some trouble, and sure enough it happened just the way I was thinking in my cold 60 year old bones.
I mean I have been around racing for a long time filming as well as reporting on racing action and every once in a while these old bones tell me what is going to happen prior to it happening. Strange you say that’s right strange but stranger things have happened.
When the Hobby feature was ready to run, all cars were on the track except the famous #41 of Scott Sherrer who was set to sit on the pole next to #33 of Rusty Johnson a world class driver in his own right.
Other drivers in the feature would be #07 of Clifton Moran, plus #E1 of Eddie Johnson, and then you had drivers like #65 Kevin Walls who comes out of the huge Alabama City, Heflin, Alabama. Walls, has been a proven winner at Little River Speedway operated by Wren Goodman in Alabama. He also is a proven winner, but tonight would night be his night. His car would be bounced around like a rubber ball, he was hit several times by different cars all making his night miserable.
Also racing was #5B of Andrew Barber, who was giving every one a time, and there were times it looked like he could pull out the win. More drivers included, #X11 Gary Brand 5th #77 Allan Gore 6th #81 Robert Hardy 7th #E1 Eddy Johnson 8th #65 Kevin Walls 9th #41 Scott Sherrer 10th #7 Brad Betsill.
But when the checkered flag was flying it would fly over #33 of Rusty Johnson’s car and coming in 2nd was #07 of Clifton Moran. When it comes to big wins Rusty has always been around at the end of the race, he also is a born winner.
Then the crowd was ready for the B-Cadet race that would feature drivers like #17 of Max Kitchens driving Marcus Caswell’s car, also in this race would be #B7 of Billy Bright Jr. a driver that hates 2nd place. On the pole was #XXX of Bo Eaton in his famous Cowboy car, with horses on the side, paint scheme was crazy you can see a photo of it to my left.
#11 T.J. Joiner was in the right place for a great night of racing, because from where he was he could see all the action between Kitchens in Caswell’s #17 and #B7 of Billy Bright. Joiner was watching as Kitchens was using his front bumper to make Billy go crazy and get him to where he would be able to pass him. That never happened because when Max tried to drive around Bright, Billy sent him crashing into the inside straightaway wall, causing both cars to be damaged and no longer able to compete.
As T.J. sat back and watched he knew this could be his night to win, he has never won a race at any track so believe it are not he was tickled to he riding around the track holding that Checkered flag waving it to the crowd, and yet knowing that this 20 year old had won his first race of his race career.
Let me tell you just a little about T.J. who has races at West Georgia Speedway and also Senoia Raceway he has never won, now he can say he did and he won not taking it out on his car, he has always taken care of his ride. His Pit crew when he has one, has famous drivers like Joe Hillman, or Cory Hillman a name that is known every where in dirt track racing, sometime his father comes and helps but mostly it is “Breanna” Hillman soon to be Breanna Joiner that gives him all the pep talks and keeps up his appetite for winning. After all Breanna grew up with dirt track racing in her blood and her famous father Joe Hillman #01J is a legend in him self.
He has no sponsors YET, but I imagine after winning a few more races he will have to beat the sponsors off.
So T.J. just sat back and watched #17 and #B7 beat and bang, and seemed to know he was sitting in the right place to get his first win. I mean you can’t beat and bang your way to a win.
When it was all over the B-Cadets were done racing, #11 T.J.Joiner was the MAN at West Georgia Speedway with the best B-Cadet car on the track.
The order of the finish was #11 T.J.Joiner * WINNER
2nd place was #313 Charlie Garrett, and in 3rd place was #XXX of Blue Ridge driver with the horses on the side of his car Bo Eaton.
Finishing in 4th place was #B7 of Billy Bright Jr. (I don’t understand because he never finished the race)
And in 5th place was #99 of Ronnie Poole.
NO WHERE WAS #17 OF WAS MAX KITCHENS, I WONDER WHY?
When the Sportsman cars took the track, we had a field of 5 cars, side by side was and one driver who has become a racing legend was on hand he is none other that #73 of “Racing Jason” Williams. Then there was a class act driver in his #25 Scott Duffy also racing was #98 of Jimmy Johnson Jr. plus #16 of Trey White and a new driver to Sportsman #4 Jeff Carter.
The race was never in doubt as Racing Jason Williams outlasted and out ran all the sportsman cars on the track. That includes #25 of Scott Duffy, who has been a winner at almost every track in Georgia.
The surprise ride of the night was #98 of Jimmy Johnson Jr. who was running hard and looked like he could be the surprise winner of the night, I know that Jeff Carter was having trouble because of the quick steering in a Sportsman car where he is used to winning in his famous #3 B-Cadet car.
At the end of the night again, Jason Williams proved he could win any where on any track.
Coming in 2nd was Scott Duffy and in 3rd place was Jimmy Johnson Jr.
Running and finishing in 4th place was #16 Trey White and finishing in 5th place was #4 of Jeff Carter.
Remember West Georgia Speedway gates will open at 2 p.m. Saturday and races begin at 4 p.m helping the folks deal with the winter chill.
Plan on coming down to the track because this Saturday night the B-Cadet cars will be running for $600 in cash, plus they will also have a dash for cash earning some driver a extra $100 so make sure you are at West Georgia this weekend for some real racing action.
Thanks to All,
